5 Things to Know About Hiring Veterans

When Matt Wood entered in to the workforce after 21 years with the United States Army, he noticed a disconnect between corporate employers and military veterans. While unemployment rates among veterans appear to be on the decline, according to Matt the number of veterans in jobs to which they are overqualified seemed to be on the rise.

Now, he's made it his mission to change the numbers and get more veterans hired, based on their skill-set. How is he going to achieve this? He started Suiting Green, a Florida-based consulting company with a mission on educating employers on how to translate military skills into meaningful civilian careers. As an army veteran and now business owner, he is very passionate about this topic and shared with us five things employers should know about hiring veterans.

Here's what he said:

5 Things to Know About Hiring Veterans

1. Not All Veterans Struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Not every veteran has PTSD and most of the ones who do have it, don’t have the violent, snap-at-the-drop-of-a-pin kind of PTSD.

2. Up for the challenge

Veterans are team builders, trainers, project managers, force multipliers, and leaders. We are masters of making things happen out of seemingly thin air to accomplish the mission, we love a good challenge, and we hate to lose.

3. Highly Educated

Not every veteran who may have served in combat was actually involved in combat. Not all veterans were in the infantry, and many of them not only have degrees but advanced degrees on top of advanced technical training.

4. Adaptable to all Work Groups

Veterans know what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. They work well as part of a team and are more than capable of working on their own.

5. Inspired Thinkers

Veterans are not robots who followed orders blindly, they don’t bark out orders expecting everyone to do what they say, and they don’t yell all the time. We may have some “colorful” language at times, but, for the most part, we are just like everyone else looking for a hand-up, not a handout.
